A Simple First Aid Kit, Basic Supplies for your Dog

Dog owners can treat minor injuries for their pets if they have the appropriate remedies, tools, and equipment available. The following list was provided courtesy of the Cincinnati Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United States:

  • Gauze Sponges
  • Triple antibiotic ointment
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Ear Syringe – 2oz. capacity
  • Ace self-adhering athletic bandage – 3in. wide
  • White petroleum jelly (Vaseline or similar)
  • Eye wash
  • Sterile, non-adherent pads
  • Pepto Bismol tablets
  • Gas-X gel caps
  • Generic Benadryl capsules – 25mg. for allergies
  • Hydrocortisone acetate – 1% cream
  • Sterile stretch gauze bandage – 3in. X 4yds
  • Buffered aspirin
  • Dermicil hypoallergenic cloth tape – 1in X 10yrds
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Kaopectate tablets – maximum strength
  • Bandage scissors
  • Icepack
  • Latex gloves
  • Penlight or small flashlight
  • Nail clippers
  • Tweezers
  • Cotton balls and swabs
  • Custom splints or wooden depressor sticks
  • Vet Rap bandage
  • Pet first- aid book
  • Blanket
  • Muzzle

  • Rectal thermometer
  • Zip – lock bags

Paperwork – your dog’s health records, micro-chip number, medications, local and national poison control numbers, regular veterinary clinic hours and phone numbers an emergency clinic hours and phone numbers.

*Store all items in containers that are waterproof and easy to transport!
